The beneficiaries of the Piggs Peak Patient Support Program were selected on medical and social criteria. A large proportion are women, as they still make up the majority of people on HIV treatment (women are required to be screened during pregnancy).
But this trend is evolving in recent years. Men now agree to be screened, often as a result of opportunistic diseases, such as tuberculosis, which often brings them to the hospital at an advanced stage, making it imperative that therapy be started immediately.
Strengthening immune defenses at this stage, especially with a better nutrition, is essential.
