At the Garden of Skills in Malanti, Eswatini, the women in the sewing workshop recently completed a batch of school uniforms for the girls at the St Paul’s School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Lesotho.
The uniforms were made to local standards, including the school’s logo, carefully embroidered using the workshop’s professional embroidery machine.
This project is part of the “Uniforms & Differences” initiative, run by the association Designing Hope, to provide school uniforms for vulnerable children in the region as well as meeting a vital need, the program provides women from the Malanti community with vocational training in tailoring, enabling them to develop skills that can be put to good use in the local job market.
Thanks to this project, not only do the children benefit from improved access to education, but the women of the community also acquire valuable skills, thus contributing to a virtuous circle of local and sustainable development.
