“I Love You Positive or Negative”: Tackling HIV Stigma
Launched in 2005 by the association Designing Hope, the “I Love You Positive or Negative” campaign carries a simple and universal message: everyone has the right to love and to be loved, regardless of their HIV status.
This initiative aims to combat stigma and discrimination related to HIV by promoting respect, inclusion and accurate information. Today, fear of rejection remains a major barrier to testing, even though modern treatments allow people living with HIV to lead long, healthy lives.
Stigma has direct consequences: many people are unaware of their status, delay access to care, or live in isolation. Women are particularly affected: often diagnosed during pregnancy, they may face rejection and social vulnerability, with consequences for both themselves and their children.
In response, the campaign promotes a message that can be adapted to all contexts — family, professional and social — in order to encourage dialogue and change perceptions.
Since its launch, “I Love You Positive or Negative” has grown through numerous artistic and participatory initiatives across Africa and Europe. Testimonials, creative projects and community-based actions continue to bring this message to life and raise awareness.
A message that remains essential today to challenge misconceptions and promote a more inclusive and supportive society.
